Can I just use peroxide bleach my hair blonde?

I m naturally ginger but for years I have dyed my hair black. I know want to go blonde.

I just tried putting a streak in with Jerome Russell 40vol 12% cream peroxide and nothing happened to my hair.

Do I need to mix it with something or did I not leave it on long enough? Any tips please!

Hair bleaching (also called decolorizing) works similarly to regular haircolor in that it uses a 'developer' or 'activator' (usually hydrogen peroxide) to soften and raise the cuticle of the hair. However, the similarities end there. Instead of depositing a color into the hair shaft, the bleaching agent penetrates the shaft and disperses the color molecules that are already there. The more color molecules that are dispersed, the lighter the hair becomes.

Bleaching is especially useful when you want to go from a darker hair color to a much lighter one. Most haircolor can be mixed with higher volume peroxides to provide greater 'lift' of the color, but in order to reach the lightest shades of haircolor, you usually need to pre-lighten the hair with a bleaching agent first.

It's important to note that bleaching the hair is a very harsh process, and can have devastating results if you aren't careful. Normal haircolor formulas will go inert after 30 minutes, so it's nearly impossible to "over-process" them. However, hair bleach will remain active as long as it has moisture and the longer it processes, the more damaged the hair will become. Likewise, the lighter you take the hair from its natural color, the more damage will occur, so always use extreme caution when using hair bleach.

Careful to not over process your hair if you have all ready had dyeing, straightening or bleaching within the last 6 weeks.

Use of a supermarket product is great as long as you follow directiong carefully. Including making a test area to test the color and damage to your hair. The coarser your hair the longer the processing time takes to penetrate the cuticles.

Bleach your hair when your ready.

Wash and rinse, then repeat.

Make sure you use a good conditioner under cold water, leaving in for at least 1 minutes before rinsing.

You may be afraid of the final results and I recommend a professional when it comes to being happy with the end result. No banana head, if you know what I mean...

theres no way you'll get to peroxide blonde or even close using peroxide.. you'll have to get your hair stripped.

Peroxide has to be mixed, normally you buy a kit. Going from black to blonde is very difiicult, most likely your going to turn orange.

Peroxide can make your hair lighter, but since you're a redhead, you may get some nasty shade of blonde (very brassy or imitation gold looking). It's also incredibly hard on hair, much more harsh than your average hair dye.

I'd really suggest having a professional dye your hair. You'll get a more natural-looking shade of blonde done by someone who's trained to color hair.

You need to mix the 40 vol with powder bleach. You will not be able to bring it up to blonde..most likely you will get a reddish to orangey color. Go to a pro.

You can use peroxide to change your color. It would not turn out the desired blonde you are looking for. The only way you can do this is by bleaching your hair or stripping the color.
