Well the OP was a natural redhead as a child which meant she was very pale so going into the sun would make her prone to sunburn easily so it can't be the sun. I think it could be in the genes. Someone in your family who has blonde hair or red pigment fades away. Strange because my wife also had natural red hair but turned light blonde naturally at age 15, without going into the sun.
