I have highlighted hair that is dyed dark brown underneath but I want it dark brown all over. I've tried this before but it always seems to fade out quickly and I think it is because of the bleach. Doe anyone have any tips for getting a really rich brown colour that is going to last. Thanks

Doing a filling process will help. This puts the needed pigments into the hair to aid in color longevity when going darker.
It will still fade, but not as bad.
Choose a red brown that is one level lighter than your intended brown. Mix the color in the bottle, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then apply it, process for 20 minutes, rinse and dry.
Then choose the desired brown in a natural hue, not ash, and not gold. Apply, process, rinse thoroughly and condition.
The result will be a rich, longer lasting brown because you have added the additional red pigments your hair needs to hold color. Skipping the first 10 minutes of processing the filler has saved your hair from unneeded damage by skipping the intitial lifting process. You don't need that from a filler. Red is difficult to remove, so it will stay through the next color process of the brown.
Don't be scared by the color result from the filler when you dry it.
Coloring your hair dirty can affect the results. The only and sole purpose this is done is because the natural oils that have built up on your hair help condition as the color works. If you have styling products in your hair like gel or hairspray, wash your hair and use a leave in conditioner, then color it.
Or, don't use styling products at all, and color your hair "1 day dirty". Brush your hair gently before hand, to work the natural oils down the hair shaft.

This happens to me too, make sure your hair is really dirty before you dye it. Keep it in a little extra longer (the dye), don't wash your hair everyday, and use shampoos and conditioners for dark brown hair. Best advise I can think of.

You need to take your hair down a few levels first.
Try doing a light brown first, then the dark brown.
Sometimes going to such extremes takes a few steps.

The problem is probably your natural hair color. Dyes fade out of some hair colors, particularly blonde and natural red, very quickly. Brown also has red undertones, and red dyes fade the quickest. In other words, you're probably going to have this problem if you continue to dye your hair the same color. Maybe try doing black with blue undertones (like a natural blue-black) underneath, if you're bold enough. I have naturally red hair, with blonde highlights, and blue-black underneath, so I can understand your difficulties on all levels : )

Most hair colors do tend to fade. But, each time you color your hair it should get deeper and last longer. You could try leaving the color on a little longer.

All you have to do is bleach it first, start out with a light brown color for at least about a week, then use a darker dye.

Go to a professional!!! It might take several trips to the salon to get the color you want. Make sure it's really what you want! Summer is coming and most chicks want lighter locks!
