You can't. If you use house hold products to lighten your hair, it will be most likely orange/brassy and damage your hair. The only way to lighten it is to use bleach or color.

Lemon most certainly does work! Mix a cup of lemon juice with two cups of water and rinse your hair every night, when you know you are going to go in the sun spray on more lemon juice (non diluted).
